SAD - Seasonal Affective Disorder   By: Reverend R Clark <clark@acceleration.net>

The psychiatrists would recommend buying a special lamp to counteract the effects of S.A.D. I would suggest that anyone suffering from S.A.D. find a psychiatrist(s) in the telephone book and see what kind/brand of lamp should be purchased. Also, some lighting stores may carry the correct type of lighting for this purpose. Ordinary lamps just won't do. As far as I know, these products do not come cheap and run in the $100-$200 range, but it may be worth it if you get years of use from it and it should alleviate your depression.

Hey! I just remembered reading about a "daylight" light bulb you can buy just about anywhere now...anyone know anything about it? Looks sort of like a corkscrew? Wonder if it would help with this condition?

  • The "light boxes" I surfed to were in the price range Adrienne mentions above. It is shameless capitalization (read rip-off) because buying the bulbs, with One to Two hundred dollars most folks could convert their entire home completely to full spectrum bulbs or get more involved like this fellow did back in 1998.
  • The definition of "full spectrum" does not seem to be standard and while back twenty years ago the Ott florescent light was about it, it is marketed under the Vita-Lite trademark. I know them to be right and I see corkscrews. Here's a link to another more mainstream lighting place that has a bunch of styles (woo hoo they have incandescents!), manufacturers and prices to choose from. I think I've used the Westinghouse florescent bulbs to good advantage and the price was good and I don't think they quite live up the Ott standard. I don't endorse the websites, just demonstrating what variety of choices there are.

“Learning how to love is the goal and the purpose of spiritual life - not learning how to develop psychic powers, not learning how to bow, chant, do yoga, or even meditate, but learning to love. Love is the truth. Love is the light.”
- Lama Surya Das in Awakening to the Sacred

“People are like stained glass windows: they sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light within.”
- Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, psychiatrist and author (1926- )

“First you are in the light, then the light is in you, then you and the light become one!”
- Shirley McLaine (Out On a Limb)

“The old divines talked about the gift of faith. It seems to me that there is an earlier gift, a desire, an openness to receive the light when and if it is offered. This openness is a quality of perception like poetry or divination or the wonderful imagination of a happy child.”
- Morris West in A View from the Ridge
