A Hospice Experience in Central Vermont By Reverend R Clark <clark@acceleration.net>
In the early Nineties I did some Hospice service for Mary Lloyd and her husband. Mary who at the time had suffered several strokes, and had lost much of her motor skills and all speech. As her companion for the afternoon, I was sitting with Mary holding her hand and I was inspired to send her some Reiki. I began to do so adding my other hand to her arm. After a couple minutes she perked up in her chair and lifting the other arm pointed around the room and said, They're Here, They're Here. indicating spots around the, other than us, unoccupied room.
I was astonished, because she was beyond speech and most movement, in fact I was so struck, the hair stood up on my arms and back of my neck. Later, when I told the other staff about it what had happened and they refused to believe me. After this pronouncement Mary settled back into the chair with a satisfied expression and a spark in her eye. She passed over the following shift.
I choose to believe that the folks at both ends of life, children and elders are the closest to Spirit and Mary, Well, in my view she was pointing up to Angels and the dearly departed.
If you continue to live in the past, your life is history.
One great thing about growing old is that nothing is going to lead to anything. Everything is of the moment.
- Joseph Campbell, "A Joseph Campbell Companion," Diane Osbon, ed.The old believe everything, the middle-aged suspect everything, the young know everything.
You don't stop laughing because you grow old, you grow old because you stop laughing.
All that is gold does not glitter.
Not all those who wander are lost.
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
