J.R.R. Tolkein by Reverend R Clark <clark@acceleration.net>
Q: I Love Tolkein!
- Yes, I Love Tolkein also. I read the "Hobbit", and the "Trilogy" at least four times... back in the early '70's. I'm not sure if I made it all the way through the "Simarillion" or not, I don't think so... it was a tough read. There were attendant ones also, his poetry, and short stories like "Farmer Giles of Ham" and even the Harvard Lampoon parody "Bored of the Rings" are quite delightful. Ralph Bakshi's animated "LotR" is awful and it was all there was for many years. A breath of fresh aire the Peter Jackson movies Rock, tho. Even after all these years I knew all the characters... names, back stories and so forth. Having fully developed characters in mind to watch the movies was unparalleled enjoyment for me. The Tom Bombadil adventure I was sad they left out. I've all the DVD versions, the two disc ones and the extended four disc ones (except unreleased RotK due out 14DEC2K4) plus the massive extras don't duplicate from one edition to the other, either. Hardly superficial (see below) it is Quite a body of work and as resistant as I am to crass commercialism normally, I am deriving maximum joy around consuming this adaptation of Tolkein's work. I am told that Tolkein's masterwork, "The Hobbit", should be in theatres by Christmas 2K5!
- Postscript: I now own the two and four disc versions of the Peter Jackson trilogy. The Hobbit sadly will likely not be made any time soon, if ever, as Jackson has no interest in attempting that project. There was a fake trailer for it circulating on the Internet that was quite intriguing. Also since there has been another release of the Trilogy with an additional hour of documentary that I didn't feel to pick up on as it seemed like crass greed on the part of New Line to triple dip.
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.
- J.R.R. TolkeinIf you continue to live in the past, your life is history.
"One great thing about growing old
is that nothing is going to lead to anything.
Everything is of the moment."
- Joseph Campbell in "A Joseph Campbell Companion" edited by Diane Osbon"The old believe everything, the middle-aged suspect everything, the young know everything."
You don't stop laughing because you grow old, you grow old because you stop laughing.
"Be more than food for the moon Be what you came here for."
