The Career Page Project

for College Success

Naturopathy

Preamble

I made the attempt as instructed to find naturopathy in the Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH), America's Career InfoNet  (ACINET), and the College Board Career Search pages to no avail. Likewise I visited and searched the databases of the Florida Employment Statistics at the Florida Department of Labor and Employment Security and the Pay scales for many occupations from the U.S. Department of Labor with no hits. As impressive (really, kudos to Jimmy and Co.) as the Career Resource Center page of job-market information links is it was very little help in this particular case. As there are only three accredited schools that teach this discipline in the US, it is not something that has wide recognition as of yet. I expect with the current trends toward the integration of holistic and alternative medicine with the standard allopathic model that this will change up, and by the time I graduate there will be plenty of niches for me to fit into.

A general description of Naturopathy

In the dictionary I find an abbreviated version of what Naturopathy is: "A method of treating disease using food and exercise and heat to assist the natural healing process."

However, on the website Naturopathics.com a description of the underlying principals may be found: "Naturopathic medicine is a system of healing which seeks to promote health by stimulating and supporting the body's inherent power to regain harmony and balance. One principle of Naturopathy is that the body possesses the power to heal itself through its internal vitality and intelligence. Another is that disease is a manifestation of the vital force applying itself to the removal of obstructions to the normal functioning of organs and tissues. The third principle is that naturopathic medicine is a holistic approach to health."

A version on just what naturopathy is in terms of the various therapies involved, from The Coalition for Natural Health "Naturopathy: a distinct system of non-invasive healthcare and health assessment in which neither surgery nor drugs are used, dependence being placed only on education, counseling, naturopathic modalities and natural substances, including without limitation, the use of foods, food extracts, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, digestive aids, botanical substances, topical natural substances, homeopathic preparations, air, water, heat, cold, sound, light, the physical modalities of magnetic therapy, naturopathic non-manipulative bodywork and exercise to help stimulate and maintain the individual's intrinsic self-healing processes."

In practice, and as simply as I may put it, a naturopath is the "General Practitioner" of alternative medicine trained in all the diagnostic methodology of a standard MD and additionally trained in the alternative and standard modalities for treatment by the various specialties. For the fullest understanding you may go to the Bastyr University site where they give more in depth discourse on each of the topics touched on above.

Educational and other resources

The professional association for naturopathy is the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians . Naturopathics.com is a directory domestic and foreign of the naturopaths worldwide that subscribe to this "yellow pages" listing of practitioners. Additionally, at this comprehensive site is found a listing of the colleges, licensing facilities and professional associations in the US. Finally, there is a refereed professional journal .

Nothing has meaning until a one attaches meaning to it.

On Christmas Eve 1994 my life took an unexpected turn. I was a passenger, in a head-on collision between two motor vehicles. This very nearly killed me. Afterward, my stay in the machinery of the healthcare industry totaled nearly nine months and left me with impaired mobility and a broken tri-cuspid valve of my heart. Due to my experiences throughout, my humble opinion is little caring exists in the standard "healthcare" system. I felt that the way that people are treated in hospital by doctors and nurses was dreadful, the vibe being they preserved my life and not my dignity. I cannot change the system or the individuals implementing it and I can change what people are offered. I was unable physically to resume my former work in light construction. I have always had an interest in natural means of healing with a strong background in herbal medicine and nutrition. I also feel totally graced by my continued existence against all odds. So to sum up, this acquired attitude on healthcare, my disabled physical condition necessitating retraining, a life long lay interest in health, and my gratitude for continued life led me to Community College of Allegheny County near Pittsburgh, PA where I attended classes for two years. Due to recent family illness in Gainesville, FL, I have relocated and am presently attending Santa Fe Community College .  I am majoring in the area of pre-medical professions. This course of study will satisfy the prerequisites for formal education in alternative medicine. The next step in the plan to become a primary care physician is to attend  Bastyr University in Seattle, WA. The Naturopathic Doctoral Program seems to fit the bill most adequately.

Affecting my decision to some small degree is the controversy that has developed between two political factions in the area of Naturopathy. It seems there is a raging debate between the so called " True Naturopaths " that wish to preserve their traditional role and the " Naturopathic Doctors " that wish to fully integrate with the standard medical community. I feel that both sides have their point and that it is mostly a scramble for what the definition of the titles ND and TN actually mean and what areas of expertise they may legally apply to treating dis-ease. It appears to be a monetarily driven debate and my sense is that the True Naturopath's are going to lose out. Regulation and licensure of doctors of all ilks seems to be a necessary evil to protect the wellbeing of the consumer from quackery. With only 11 states in the US providing for licensing of Naturopaths there is much room for debate amongst the states that have pending legislation in these matters.

The concept of the wounded healer put forth by C. G. Jung states that the best healers have personal experience with compromised health and/or are able to clearly access their woundedness. I hope to live up to this potential bringing a focused, unconditional positive regard and caring attitude to those in need. In this way perhaps I will take the "lemons" presented by my injury and sweeten them up to make "lemonade."
