Hi Rev and all- Thanks for your kind thoughts. Reverend R Clark wrote:I could be wrong and I think you are talking about what I've heard called a "Water Drum" where a portion of a calabash/gourd is half submerged in a water bath and played with a pair of smallish serving spoon size and shaped gourd pieces.Bev responds-Actually both you and Ritva, who responded offline, pointed that out. Ritva sent photos that clarified definitely that the non bara "drum" I had seen illustrated was definitely NOT a water drum. For one thing, as Ritva pointed out, not only is the water drum not a drum since it has no membrane, but it is played with the half gourd inverted into a larger receptacle (gourd or pan of some sort) filled with water. The photographs I saw, which I think corresponded to the "drum" that Boyd originally spoke about, showed a man playing an inverted half gourd that was simply placed on the ground, and the bara is, of course, a skin headed drum made on a round gourd base. I have a set of a set of Drum Circle Ettiquette rules posted on one of my blogs: http://360.yahoo.com/PrismConcept Many of the points on the one you posted are covered similarly. I think we had this exchange on another line last year, but perhaps it would prove useful for others. The blog I mentioned is devoted only to drumming and Native American Flute and does not have much on it yet. It will get articles as I write them for other purposes. Life is too short to keep up with everything. Thanks for everything Rev, Ritva and all- Beverly Walk in beauty on your path.
