- Shyness a challenge for you? It has been for me, too <blush and giggle>. It is a behavior that stems probably from my lack of self-esteem. I've thought about taking a seminar or getting counseling and frankly I don't deserve it. Other areas that need work: I also have a morbid fear that I am following people and these near continuous attacks of Happiness, they just won't go away no matter how I try and are starting to get me down. <grin> Please pray and send Reiki to my "Highest Good," Thank you, Thanks and Praises!
- It is noticeable that when we feel fear it's in our body First, usually a gut clench, and Then we feel afraid in our mind. It is like that for me anyway. Spirit seems to have no such fear. So perhaps a body technique is in order, what has helped me every time I can remember to do it is a physical technique I got out of a book called Yoga for Men Only. Drawing the shoulders down, rotate them forward and compressing the chest, push down and hold for several seconds and then release. Done properly the shoulders should pop back slightly. Repeat as necessary. Due to propriosensation feeding back to our brain a feeling of lightness and strength we gain "backbone" so to speak. For this exercise seems to instill confidence and promotes a regal posture befitting of a Child o' God.
- A quick search reveals there are several websites devoted to Shyness and overcoming it. Check shyandfree.com it looks pretty good to me. I just wish I rated the time I would need to spend to build this self-esteem thing <grin>.
There is a transcendent power in example. We reform others unconsciously when we walk uprightly.
-Anne Sophie Swetchine (1782-1857) Russian-French author
Acquisition of [higher] knowledge is not the end, but the means to the end; the end consists of the attainment, thanks to this knowledge of the higher worlds, of greater and truer self-confidence, a higher degree of courage, and a magnanimity and perseverance such as cannot, as a rule, be acquired in the lower world. For every one step that you take in the pursuit of higher knowledge, take three steps in the perfection of your own character.
- Rudolf Steiner
Real fearlessness is the product of tenderness. It comes from letting the world tickle your heart, your raw and beautiful heart. You are willing to open up, without resistance or shyness, and face the world. You are willing to share your heart with others.
- Chogyam Trungpa in The Essential Chogyam Trungpa edited by Carolyn Rose Gimian
Feelings like disappointment, embarrassment, irritation, resentment, anger, jealousy, and fear, instead of being bad news, are actually very clear moments that teach us where it is that we're holding back. They teach us to perk up and lean in when we feel we'd rather collapse and back away. They're like messengers that show us, with terrifying clarity, exactly where we're stuck. This very moment is the perfect teacher, and, lucky for us, it's with us wherever we are.
- Pema Chödrön (When Things Fall Apart)
Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves.
We must believe that we are gifted for something, and that this thing, at whatever cost, must be attained.
